Barb Mizik Art & Design

About
I am an artist living and working in Leawood, Kansas. After a long, happy career as a hand lettering and illustration artist for Hallmark Cards, I retired to focus on my passion for painting with encaustic medium and mixed media art such as acrylics, alcohol inks and watercolors. Some of the items I make include, wall art, magnets, prints, jewelry and art lamps. When I’m not making art, I enjoy spending time with my husband and family-especially my granddaughters. They all Inspire me!
What inspires you to create?
In nature, relationships and human made objects and the connections that these have to each other, I find patterns, stories and colors to inspire and influence me. I absorb all the imagery and then express it using a variety of mixed media. This may be translated in an abstract or representational way.
What advice would you give to people looking to express their creativity?
Follow artists on Instagram or Pinterest whose work you like and then search for classes and workshops in that style or technique. If the artists don’t offer classes themselves, you might find some at your local art store, parks and rec. departments or junior college continuing ed. programs. I find that in-person learning is best but there are also a lot of good online classes too.
How does your art connect with people?
The happiness I get from making art is truly found in the process of doing it.
My desire is to create work that is upbeat and positive that I hope will instill in the viewer a sense of contentment and joy. The joy I find when I’m making it.
