Care for Our Planet 2021-22

— UPDATED SEPTEMBER 2022 —

For decades, Hallmark has been caring for the planet through sustainable business practices. This commitment reaches back as far as 1903 when Crayola crayons and chalk were made in a facility powered sustainably by renewable energy from a water mill. Over the years, it continued to grow as we’ve expanded our efforts to include initiatives such as sourcing paper sustainably, reducing energy and waste, and beginning to implement renewable energy. Efforts to transform our business and reduce greenhouse gas emissions will continue to be a priority.

“We know that, as a global company, we have a responsibility to secure the planet for future generations by protecting our planet’s valuable resources and reducing our impact on the climate,” said Kristin Edie, Hallmark’s VP of enterprise sustainability. “Sustainability is no longer a trend; it’s a global imperative and Hallmark is stepping up to do our part to care for our planet.”

Hallmark’s enterprise sustainability strategies continue to evolve and be elevated as we focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions created by our business operations, products, and supply chain. Every step we take is progress, but we recognize that more needs to be done. Since the start of our sustainability journey nearly 120 years ago, we remain committed to creating a better, more sustainable future for us all.

Hallmark Expands EARTH to Other Global Offices

UN SDGs + Hallmark CSR Goals:
Sustainable Cities + Communities
/  Life On Land

When Hallmark launched the employee resource group (ERG) Environmental Awareness, Responsibility, and Transparency at Hallmark, or EARTH, in late 2020, it was primarily made up of a group of employees at Hallmark’s global headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. However, as news of EARTH spread, and meetings and events continued to be held virtually, engagement with the group continued to grow, as did interest from Hallmark’s employees globally to get more involved.

In 2021, EARTH expanded to include people at many of Hallmark’s operations in the Kansas City area and around the world. From manufacturing plants in Lawrence and Leavenworth, Kansas, to our Distribution Center in Liberty, Missouri, to Hallmark’s UK office to our Hong Kong office, employees are excited to contribute to the company’s sustainability efforts and learn how we can all be responsible citizens of the world.

“EARTH believes that caring for our environment is another way to enrich every life, every day,” said Emily Akins, chair of EARTH. “Many of our offices already had their own sustainability efforts going at a local level, so forming EARTH gave us an opportunity to knit together all of these efforts so we can see the greater impact. When we each do a little, we all do a lot, so we’re excited for the future of EARTH and what we can do for our business and our employees.”

Hallmark UK Celebrates All Mums with 100% Recyclable Cards on Mother’s Day

UN SDGs + Hallmark CSR Goals:
Responsible Consumption + Production

On Mother’s Day, which fell on March 14, 2021, in the United Kingdom, every Hallmark card exchanged had an extra special feature: it was 100 percent recyclable. Every card in the 600-piece collection could be recycled with all the ribbons, tassels, and bow attachments made from paper. The use of recyclable material reduced the collection’s carbon footprint, giving mums another reason to smile.

“Changing the world happens one caring step at a time,” said Emily Barhador, Hallmark UK’s sustainability lead. “We know our efforts account for only a small portion of the work that needs to be done, but we’re so proud of the progress we’re making.”

Hallmark UK is creating meaningful action for the benefit and sustainability of our community, our planet, and our people by focusing on efforts where the company can make the greatest impact.

Hallmark’s Hong Kong Office Participates in Coastal Cleaning Efforts

UN SDGs + Hallmark CSR Goals:
Sustainable Cities + Communities
/  Life On Land

A dozen employees from Hallmark’s Hong Kong office joined with their families in March 2021 to clean a pair of beaches located in New Territories. The group picked up trash that tourists and other visitors left behind. Through this activity, our employees not only participated in protecting the environment, but also educated their children on sustainability and care for the planet.

In August 2022 Crown Media Family Networks was renamed Hallmark Media.
