According to research by the Animal Hospital Association:
  • 79 percent of pet owners give holiday or birthday presents to their pets.
  • More than half of dog owners (55 percent) view themselves as the parents of their pets.
  • Some 62 percent sign cards and letters from themselves and the pet.
Hallmark introduced its first pet sympathy card in 1984.
In 2008 as part of its greeting card creation competition on Hallmark.com/you, Hallmark asked consumers to submit funny pet photos and write a funny birthday message to go with them. More than 7,000 entered the online competition. The cards were sold in stores during the summer 2008.

Product Features

  • Hallmark includes pets in the family’s celebration of occasions and seasonal holidays. Cards to pets from their owners, and to owners from the family dog or cat are included in birthday and seasonal selections.
  • A number of cards acknowledge the sense of bereavement a pet owner feels with the loss of an animal that is literally part of the family.
  • Other cards congratulate someone on getting a new pet or provide words of thanks to a favorite pet sitter.
  • Several unique photo frames memorialize special moments with the family pet.
  • The "Family Dog" and "Pampered Pooch" Instant Scrapbooks give consumers a creative way to record memories of their pets.
  • Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments available beginning in July offer several designs featuring dogs and cats including photo frame ornaments. Additional Hallmark-branded ornaments also play on consumers' love for their pets. A cat ornament available beginning fall 2009, for example, says "The ultimate in laptops" and a dog design says "Bone-a-fied best friend." 
  • Gift Books From Hallmark offers pet-related titles, such as Talk to the Tail, Dogs Antics & Attitudes, Cats Antics & Attitudes, and Pets’ Letters to God II.
