Hallmark Products That Give Back
Hallmark first aligned itself with Susan G. Komen for the Cure® in 1999, when the company launched its Cards for the Cure® program. Since its inception, Hallmark Cards for the Cure has raised more than $2.7 million in donations for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
Hallmark chose to support breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment programs because it is an issue that affects its customers, as well as the owners and employees of Hallmark Gold Crown® stores located across the country.
In 2006, Hallmark became the exclusive creator, manufacturer and distributor for all UNICEF greeting cards sold in the United States. Since the beginning of Hallmark’s partnership with UNICEF, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF has received more than $5.5 million dollars in royalty payments from the sale of UNICEF greetings and related products.
Hallmark announced its partnership with (PRODUCT) RED™ in October 2007. The (RED)™ partnership is Hallmark’s largest social-impact initiative in the history of the company.
These charities benefit from the sale of Hallmark products:
(PRODUCT) RED™
- 8 percent of net wholesale sales from all Hallmark (PRODUCT) RED™ products will go to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS in Africa.
- Hallmark offers 141 (PRODUCT) RED™ greeting cards for birthday, love, friendship, encouragement, thinking of you, wedding, baby, thank you, and congratulations.
- Hallmark also offers seasonal (PRODUCT) RED™ cards for holidays and occasions such as Christmas and graduation.
- The cards range from smart, yet somewhat risqué humor to those with socially aware messages that border on spiritual.
- The line includes Cards With Sound that play favorite songs by the original artists with CD-like quality, Cards With Motion and Sound that bring to life an animated scene, and Big Time Sound 11-by-11-inch cards with enhanced sound quality.
- Several recording artists are unique to the (PRODUCT) RED™ line, including Joss Stone and the Dixie Chicks.
- The Hallmark (PRODUCT) RED line also includes:
UNICEF (The United Nations Children’s Fund)
- 15 percent of every net wholesale shipment of UNICEF products is paid to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.
- Hallmark offers more than 100 UNICEF cards for general sending as well as birthday, friendship, baby, wedding, sympathy, congratulations, thank you, encouragement and love. Boxed greeting cards and note cards also are available.
- Hallmark also offers seasonal UNICEF cards for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Halloween and Christmas. The seasonal line includes individual cards as well as boxed cards.
- UNICEF cards feature globally inspired, sophisticated designs paired with short, meaningful messages. Some cards include beads, jewels, buttons, cording and stitching to give a handcrafted feel, with surprising inside color and insert pages.
- The line includes Cards With Sound that play favorite songs by the original artists and audio clips from movies and TV shows with CD-like quality. The music of Celine Dion is featured exclusively on Hallmark UNICEF cards.
- Hallmark also creates corporate greeting cards for UNICEF, which are sold through the organization’s direct-to-business channel.
- Hallmark Gold Crown® stores distribute the annual Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF collection boxes. Children use the boxes to collect money for UNICEF. Since 1950, American children have raised more than $144 million through this program.
- The U.S. Fund for UNICEF will receive $1.12 from each sale of the "A World of Peace and Love" Hallmark Keepsake Ornament in 2009. “Peace and Love” appear in English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian on the ornament.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
- Hallmark’s Cards for the Cure® program, now in its 11th year, guarantees a minimum donation of $200,000 to Komen for the Cure in 2009 to support breast cancer research and community outreach programs.
- Each year, more than 3,000 Hallmark Gold Crown® stores choose to participate in the Cards for the Cure program. They receive 200 specially designed greeting cards, as well as donation envelopes that can be sent directly to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Each store decides when to display the cards – some stores display them around the time of their local Race for the Cure® event, and others display them during October to coincide with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many stores also develop their own fundraising and marketing efforts to support the partnership between Hallmark and Komen.
- Stores distribute the annual Cards for the Cure greeting card free to customers. The card reminds friends and family about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Either the artist or writer of the card typically has a personal connection to breast cancer.
- Other products available for purchase in Hallmark Gold Crown stores, with a percentage of the retail sales price supporting Komen for the Cure, also have been designated as part of the program through the years. In 2009, these include:
- "Angel of Strength" is the 11th Hallmark Keepsake Ornament to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. $2 from the sale of every ornament will be donated to the organization.
- The Spirit of Hope book provides words of encouragement and support, making it a perfect gift for raising someone’s spirits. 10 percent of the retail price from the sale of each book (priced $9.95) is donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
- Hope Songs to Celebrate Life CD is a compilation of major recording artists such as Nelly Furtado, Elton John, Shania Twain, Maroon 5, and Diana Krall. $1 of the retail price from the sale of each CD is donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
- Within Hallmark’s encouragement card line, there is a pink card with a pink ribbon designed to provide support to anyone fighting breast cancer. 10 percent of the retail sales price of this specific card (priced $2.29) is donated to Komen for the Cure.
