Media Statement:
Celebrity Humor Cards
Some of Hallmark's new humor greeting cards are parodies of today's most popular celebrities and politicians. These cards take a satirical look at news and gossip surrounding these public figures, and we do not believe the cards violate any of these public figures' rights.
Hallmark obtains licenses from celebrities when appropriate, and it has many such licenses for which it pays royalties or fees. When Hallmark uses a photograph, it obtains a license from the copyright owner. Some of Hallmark's humor greeting cards are parodies which comment on news and gossip surrounding public figures – such uses are protected speech and therefore, no license is needed from the celebrity.
